Observations
A few observations from today:

1. I like Andy Carroll. I want him to be back to his best and terrorise defenses like we know he can. However, he simply does not fit into the system that brought so much success early season. Our counter attacking play requires a mobile front man who makes defenders work and think twice, running the channels to open up space for our creative midfielders and wingers. Carroll not only does not do this but it prevents the whole system from working. Pretty much the same thing that happened last season when the Valencia / Sakho partnership was broken up. I do not understand why a player like Sakho was pushed out to the wing just to shoehorn in Andy Carroll.

2. We lacked balance and fight in midfield. Again I am a big fan of mark noble who on his day is a very good footballer. However with Song coming back and even Obiang (who I think has been excellent when played) these two offer better options than Noble on current form. A holding player who then allows Kouyate to play in a more advanced role at which I think he is more effective.

3. Moses. Was amazing against Newcastle, and has had influential moments in other games, notably city, however I think he has been equally ineffective in many games. To the degree where I don't understand what Antonio has got to do to get a start? I saw Antonio several times in the championship and he was head and shoulders above the rest. However he cannot get a look in over Moses presently.

4. Presently I don't know how Jelavic gets so many cameo appearances? He's done nothing to warrant it and he's not gonna score in a month of Sunday's yet always gets the nod over others.

5. Bilic really needs to get a grip on the defence. With the same players as last season, too many individual errors have crept in and it's costing us goals. Today jenkinson was to blame for coming in too tight on kane and Reid completely lost auderwield at the corner. It's quite alarming and I really thought Bilic would have this side of the team locked in.

Not complaining, been a good season so far all in all and we knew it would be a roller coaster. But I think some basic changes could have avoided that result today, because I really fucking hate Spurs.

Thoughts?

the biggest issue is the Full Backs are terrible defenders

That's certainly been one theme. Even in some of the games we've won, however, it's been clear that our midfield does not provide enough cover for our defence, whether down the flanks or though the middle.

I'm sure Slav's aware of this and has made what he feels is the best of what he's had available. I've been saying it for a while, we need a 3 man midfield of (now that Noble's banned) Song, Obiang and Kouyaté.

Hopefully, that'll help put an end to another negative theme of our play that has become all too apparent - we are getting bullied. Everton clearly set out to do this and we were pushed about today to a degree that was embarrassing.

The biggest issue as I see it in the games we have lost is that our full backs are too exposed.

Carroll should have blocked the run, never mind attacking the ball, no two ways about it. He was ball watching.

Re: Observations
Bang on about Kayoute being released by playing a holding player who can retain possession - i.e. Song..

Am a supporter of Noble as he's WH through and through but starting to see he's just not good enough often enough. Today he was very poor, tried hard but just not good enough.

Shame as he's s decent lad, but he shouldn't get an auto start now.

I fucking detest Spurs too, just shy of Liverpool.

2nd best all over the park... Lanzini only player to turn up. Kayoute was OK. Reid was OK but the rest of the defence bloody terrible

Re: Observations
Auderweild had already lost Reid before he clattered into Sakho.
Carroll was the spare man and should have attacked that ball.

Their third goal, gifted by Tomkins, straight after half time, killed the game off.

Spurs were winning every second ball and I lost count of the amount of times we gave the ball away. Poor performance from all the players except Adrian, who kept the score down.

Moses should have been hooked at half time. Needs to up his game massively IMO and Antonio now deserves a chance.

Violator - Reid bumped into Sakho and just stopped. He could easily have continued but didn't even attempt it. It was awful defending.

Reid ran into Sakho, Carroll didn't know the defender was on his arse

Re: Observations
Mart - Carroll should have done better but it was Reids man. He just stopped.

Was terrible defending all round. You can't be giving 'free' goals away to the top six. We gave them two today.

Re: Observations
I think point 2 is the key. I was panicking when we played Kouyate further up the pitch earlier in the season - it was like a cavalier roving attack squad that looked suicidal at times. But I have to admit that we were dangerous then - the last few matches we've looked much more solid as a unit but much less potent as an attacking force.

Noble I thought was quite terrible today and it'll be nice to see a midfield without him in it next match.

5. It was Carroll that lost his man at the corner for the goal, not Reid. Doubly disappointing, given the rest of his showing, as defending set pieces in the air is normally an area where you can count on him.

That's what happens writing on a phone

Anyway, the point is I think Sakho should be playing as the centre forward from the start. I'm not knocking Jelavic, just think we have better options coming off the bench.

The Jelavic that won more balls than Carroll and Sakho combined for the time he was on the pitch, and set up our goal? That one right?
